Jared's perspective:
It was pretty cool how we met.....pretty miraculous actually!
It all began on a sunny Sunday afternoon last summer in Sacramento California. I had just gotten home from church, had some good dinner, and started to think about what I was going to do the rest of the day. At church earlier that day, someone had announced that there would be a fireside (church meeting) that night for all of the single adults in the city. I thought that it would be fun. The only downside would be that it would be on the other side of the city, about thirty minutes away!
I asked my buddies if they wanted to come with me, but they were all too busy. I didn't really want to go to something like that all by myself, so I figured that I just wouldn't go. A couple hours passed and I looked at the clock and saw that the meeting would be starting in about five minutes. Even though I realized that I would be super late, I thought "Oh what the heck, I'll just go late. I can just talk to my mom on the phone during the drive anyways," and I left.
When I finally got to the meeting, the chapel was completly full and I was really late.
(this is where the story heats up)
I found a seat about midway to the front of the chapel, on the far left side. A couple minutes after I sat down, I noticed something come into my view, a couple rows in front of me to my right. (this is where the story REALLY heats up).
I saw a really pretty girl and a guy. These are my exact thoughts at this point:
"Wow, that girl is cute! I want to talk to her when this is over!"
(then I noticed the guy walking in next to her and figured he was probably her boyfriend)
.....then I made a crazy decision in my mind that ended up being very profound....
I thought to myself, "I don't care if she has a boyfriend or not, I'm going to talk to that girl!"
Crazy, huh!
So during the meeting, I happened to slightly notice her a little bit, sitting there a few rows in front of me on my right side. Actually, I was probably STARING at her! During the meeting, I noticed a few interesting things: First of all, she seemed to be leaning forward, and seemed to be leaning back most of the time. There was no whispering or giggling or sitting close or anything like that. Then I had a wonderful thought: MAYBE HE IS HER BROTHER!
Then I was excited.
As the meeting came to an end, I had one goal. Immediately, I looked to my right to see her dart up from her seat and practically run out of the chapel! Where was she going? Was she going to leave? Would I miss my one chance to talk to her and never see her again?
After everything I had been thinking (and the commitment that I made to myself), I decided to go after her! I wouldn't let her leave without meeting her!
When I got into the hall, I saw that she was going to the get a drink of water. This is a very hard moment in the life of a young single guy........ the first contact.
When she was done getting her drink, I got a quick sip, to seem less stalker'ish, then I made my move. Here's how it happened:
"Hey, do I know you?"
(short pause....she was thinking)
"Did you go to BYU-Idaho?" I asked.
......and the rest is history!!!!
After realizing that we didn't actually know each other (who would have guessed?), we did realize that we had a close connection.
I found out that she was selling for Clark Pest Control and told her that I was out there selling for Bell Pest Control. I asked her if she had sold before and she said that she sold once before, two summers ago, in San Diego California.
I sold in San Diego too, and asked which company she was with. She said it was "Dannex." I sold with Dannex its first year, and there were only about eight people there, so I told her that I figured that it was the year after I was there. She told me that it couldn't have been, because she sold for Dannex on their first year too....then we realized the connection. I sold in that office for the first two months of the summer with my best bud Mark, then we left to work at EFY for the second half of the summer. She came there after she came home from her mission, TEN DAYS after I left!
Also, her younger brother Devin (who is on a mission in South Africa) was my and Mark's roommate that summer!! Wow.
Anyways...........I should give you something if you are still reading this!
That night, we talked at the church for a long time. Everybody had practically left the building and I hadn't noticed anyone at all, it was just Sarin.
Later that night, as we were driving to her place to play games with the guys she worked with, we got sooooooo lost! It took us about two hours to find ourselves, and it was so fun!
She was awesome.
That was a great summer.
Sarin's perspective:
So, my version of the story is, as probably most, different from my fiance’s. Many moons ago (last summer), I was selling pest control in Sacramento. It was early June, and I had just broken up with my boyfriend. No exaggeration, the very day that we broke up, I went to a fireside with some guys I worked with.
After the fireside was over, I made a beeline for the chapel doors because I needed a breather from the people I was with. I headed towards the water fountain in the lobby, and felt someone behind me. I got a drink, and halfway turned to see who it was. A cute boy looked at me, and gave the original “you look familiar” line. I was completely naïve to his true motives. He introduced himself as Jared Ullrich, and I immediately began to play the “get to know you” game, starting with “Oh, did you go to BYU-Idaho?”
We actually figured out that two summers previously, he roomed with my younger brother, Devin, when they were down in San Diego selling pest control. I would have definitely known Jared if he hadn’t left San Diego halfway through the summer because about ten days after he left I came and worked with my brother for the same small company. Crazy!!
So anyway, we talked for a while in the lobby, and one of the guys I came with invited Jared and I to come play games with them. Jared drove me there. But on the road, we were so engrossed in conversation that we ended up clear out in nowheresville seriously on the way to a far away place.
We eventually found our way back, but were in no particular hurry. From then on, we hung out often, and not too long later started dating. And no matter what anyone thinks, it wasn’t because he rented a convertible for one of our first dates and took me to San Fransisco. (although that did help J)
